I cannot emphasize enough the timeliness and effectiveness of the Biswas Committee, especially its critical role in making BTP optional, which will free up a lot of faculty time, for snoozing, fishing or perhaps even academic pursuits. Actually, as far as the rest of the country is involved, IIT’s role pretty much ends with issuing JEE ranks. As far as IIT students are concerned, IIT’s role extends a little further: providing hostel acco for four years and then providing a clean, well-lighted place for placements.
So if the IIT administration were bold enough we could do far more interesting things, like convert classrooms to hotel rooms and rent them out at a premium. The trend has already begun with SINE, but should be brought to its natural conclusion. With time freed up from teaching, a fraction of faculty can be on vacation much of the time, and their apartments can be let out as vacation rental to city people with green in their pocket but no green around.
